… when you check your weather app to find out how the weather will be tomorrow in Germany or Italy, there is a good chance the information is based on a weather forecasting model that was developed in collaboration between Italy, Switzerland and Germany?

More than 20 years ago, a Consortium for Small-scale Modelling (COSMO) was formed for scientific collaboration on high-resolution short-term weather forecasting between the German, Swiss, Italian and Greek weather services. Today, the consortium has 12 members from 8 countries (Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Switzerland).

From Italy four services are involved - Aeronautica Militare-Reparto per la Meteorologia, CIRA Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali, ARPAE Agenzia Regionale per la Prevenzione, l’Ambiente e l’Energia Emilia-Romagna, and ARPA Piemonte Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione Ambientale Piemonte.

The COSMO model was originally based on a high-resolution model of the German weather service and improved ever since. More and more insights into the physics of the atmosphere, more and higher resolution data to feed the model (in particular from satellites) and faster computers make weather forecasting so much better and more reliable today than it was 20 years ago.

COSMO is a success story for effective collaboration across national services, researchers and end users to the benefit of all of us – or don't you check the weather apps?
